Veterinarians
DISCLAIMER: MOST OF THESE ARE ONLY VETERINARIANS "RECOMMENDED" TO ME BY OTHER BREEDERS AND/OR OWNERS WHO HAVE SOUGHT TREATMENT.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU CHOOSE TO SEEK TREATMENT AT ONE OF THESE PLACES, AND HAVE A BAD EXPERIENCE.
(scroll all the way down to the bottom for some stories about people who went to the wrong Vet)
I have kept this list of Veterinarians who have been recommended as being knowledgeable with Bulldogs and/or Frenchies for about 35 years now. There may be some on here who are no longer in business, or whose business has changed hands for the better or worse. This list is NOT purported to be complete; these are only the places people have reported to me that they have had good experiences at. If you go to one of these clinics and have a dreadful experience, or, if you have located another Veterinarian who you think should be added to this list (Mostly Florida; other States at the bottom), please let me know and I will update the list.
DulcineaBulldogs@gmail.com
Again, these are Vets (recommended to me by other breeders and owners) for their expertise with FRENCH and ENGLISH BULLDOGS.
Remember: Your first question when interviewing a prospective Veterinarian for your dog is "How many French Bulldog clientele do you have ?". If your dog needs to have something done, you don't want a Vet who has done it 6 times, you want one who has done it 600 times.
Don't let anyone PRACTICE medicine on YOUR dog.
Let them practice on someone else's dog. Seek out a Veterinarian who has experience with your breed. ASK how many French Bulldog clients they have.
And with anything surgical, get a 2nd opinion.

These are all stories about English Bulldogs. So far, knock on wood, I don't have any horror stories about Frenchies.......
WRONG VET Story # 1: A guy called me from Pinellas County, wanting to give his Bulldog up for adoption to the TBBC Rescue Program. I asked him what the problem was, since we didn't take "biters". He said his Vet told him the dog needed Entropion Surgery in both eyes and the bill would be $1700. He loved his dog, but did not have $1700, and could not watch the dog suffer. I asked him to make one more effort before he did this thing of giving up his family member, and that was to make the trip out to Dr Lockhart in Lakeland, and let him see if he agreed. About 3 months later, I got another phone call. The man said, "I don't know if you remember me... I called a while back to give my dog up for adoption. I just wanted to let you know that I did take him out to your "Dr L". He said the surgery was only needed in one eye and the bill was only $350. I just wanted to Thank You from the bottom of my heart."
WRONG VET Story # 2: A man called looking for referral to a Bulldog breeder. His 6 yr old Bully Boy had just died a few months prior, and he was ready now to get another dog. I wanted to know why the dog died so young, so we talked about it for about an hour. At the end of the conversation, I told him that if he had been going to Dr Lockhart, his dog would still be alive. Here's what happened: First, the dog had chronic overall yeast infection of his skin, ears and feet. Instead of getting to the source of the problem (FOOD ALLERGIES), his Vet spent 4-5 years selling the man topical sprays, gels, and anti-yeast treatments and had him convinced they were doing the best thing for the dog. In addition to destroying the dog's physiology in that manner, neither the man nor the Vet ever realized that the "white foam" the dog was throwing up regularly, was a clear indication that the dog had an elongated soft palate. The man assumed it was a result of the dog constantly chewing on his feet (which were covered with sprays and gels), because of the yeast infection on his skin. At the end of the conversation, I told him Dr Lockhart's first question to him would have been "What are you feeding this dog", which very well may have resolved the yeast infection. And the second thing he would have done, was look down the poor dog's throat and recommended throat surgery for his elongated soft palate, which I believe was most of his problem, and which was NEVER diagnosed.
WRONG VET story # 3: A man had a young male Bulldog who only had one testicle where it should have been. He called me to see what could be done. I told him to take the dog to Dr Lockhart but, because he was from Pinellas County, and thought it was too far to drive to Lakeland, he ended up paying $1700 to a Vet who was close to home, but unable to find the other testicle. He finally did go to Dr Lockhart, who found the testicle, and for only $600. So he saved about an hour on the road, and it cost him $1100 more than it should have.
WRONG VET story # 4: A girl called me, her 5 month old Bulldog puppy has had pneumonia and been on A-B (Anti-biotics) almost since the day she got him. Also, he has an enlarged heart. Her Vet has him on one A-B after another because he becomes immune to them, and LASIX, which is a diuretic, for the alleged pneumonia. It just did not sound right to me, so again, I asked her to take the dog to Dr Lockhart out in Lakeland. She went to Dr L along with her Vet's xrays and medical records. The xrays were of such poor quality, they were not useable, so new ones were taken. It was determined that the dog did NOT have an enlarged heart, and there was NO SIGN of pneumonia. In fact, Dr L complimented the dog on how fit he was. He did think that he had a palate problem, which would have accounted for the raspy throat and people thinking he had some kind of upper respiratory infection ~ pneumonia. You have to wonder how long that poor dog could have survived on that high regimen of the wrong drugs for no apparent reason, other than the fact that the Vet did not know that BULLDOGS ARE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BREEDS. You cannot compare a Bulldog chest xray to a Golden Retreiver chest xray... they simply are NOT comparable.
WRONG VET story # 5: A guy called me from Orlando. His 6 month old Bully girl was constantly rubbing her butt up against things. His Vet determined that she had too much skin around her vulva, and wanted to SURGICALLY REMOVE THIS ALLEGED EXCESS SKIN. Again, I asked him to PLEASE make the trip to Dr Lockhart. He called me a few weeks later to let me know that Dr L said she just had a little yeast in the skin folds, and gave him some cream to put on it. Guess What... she stopped itching. NO SURGERY NEEDED
WRONG VET story # 6: A guy called me about his 6 yr old spayed girl, wanting to know what I thought about an ooozing breast that was diagnosed at the Humane Society Vet as mastitis, where they lanced it and put her on anti-biotics. I was going to Dr Lockhart's that day, so I told him I would ask him about it. He said mastitis is related to breast feeding and it's HIGHLY UNLIKELY that a spayed girl would have mastitis; it is probably cancer. I asked him to bring her to Dr Lockhart. Proper diagnosis was that it was cancer, which now had spread deeply into the stomach and leg tissue, and to her lungs. If she had been seen sooner, Dr Lockhart could have saved her life. But the misdiagnosis COST her life !
WRONG VET story # 7: This one is my favorite. My friend from NY was in West Palm, and her Frenchie was rocking back and forth on her butt, and simultaneously snapping at the ceiling. She went to a Vet over in West Palm who, after $1600 worth of tests, determined that the dog either had some kind of neurological problem or a brain tumor. She called her Vet back in NY, crying, and told him what was going on. He told her to take the dog to a groomer, and ask them to express the dog's anal glands. $40 later: PROBLEM SOLVED. NO NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEM, NO BRAIN TUMOR..... just anal sacks that needed to be cleaned
WRONG VET story # 8: A man called me to let me know that his dog died and the Vet thinks he got some kind of an allergic reaction to something because he was coughing up white foam. OBVIOUSLY his Vet was not familiar with Bulldogs. White Foam is a CLEAR indication that the dog has an elongated soft palate that was blocking his airway CAUSING the saliva to be pulled in and out with EVERY BREATH. He did not heed the advice to keep lemon juice in the Fridge and squirt it into his mouth whenever he saw WHITE FOAM. And his not-familiar-with-Bulldogs-Vet failed FAILED to diagnose the problem.
THE MORAL OF THESE STORIES IS THIS: THE VET WHO'S BEEN TREATING YOUR MOTHER'S FOO-FOO DOG FOR 20 YEARS MIGHT BE A GREAT DINNER GUEST, BUT IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE A "BULLDOGGER", YOU NEED TO FIND A VET WHO KNOWS "BRACHECEPHALIC BREEDS" !!!!!
YOU WOULDN'T TAKE YOUR CHILD TO A RHEUMATOLOGIST... YOU'D TAKE HIM TO A PEDIATRICIAN. YES... THEY ARE BOTH DOCTORS. BUT WOULDN'T YOU WANT TO GO TO THE DOCTOR WHO HAS TREATED CHILDREN EVERY DAY OF HIS LIFE ?????????
SO TAKE YOUR BULLDOG OR YOUR FRENCHIE
TO A VET WHO IS EXPERIENCED TREATING BULLDOGS AND FRENCHIES
.
